Malcolm Gladwell, Transactive Memory, And Pair Programming

Posted: May 27, 2008 at 2:12 PM by Ben Nadel

Thanks to a recommendation by Clark Valberg , I recently read The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell. It was a good read and I like Gladwell's somewhat meandering story telling style. One thing that he mentioned really caught my attention - Transactive Memory. In the book he explains that when two peo... read more »

Work At Edit.com - The Website Maintenance Experts

My friends at Edit.com are looking for three people to join their team. Recently, I have had a chance to talk with David Ries and it sounds like they are building some really awesome applications over there; elastic clouds, on-demand services, project management systems, remote communication. I am always impressed with Dave's vision and his arch... read more »

A Reminder About Interfaces And The User Experience

Posted: April 15, 2008 at 8:29 AM by Ben Nadel

Tags: HTML / CSS, Work

Let's face it, we're programmers - we think about code - wonderful, beautiful, well-tabbed code. The biggest problem that we face is in our applications is that our target users are not programmers and they don't think about code at all. The only thing that they think about is what they can see and feel, which is of course, the user experience. Ev... read more »

Been Busy, Ready To Be Back

Posted: April 7, 2008 at 2:43 PM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Life, Work

For the last month or so, I have been just working like a three headed ox to get out from under a pile of deadlines (I've never seen a three headed ox, but I have to imagine it would be an insanely beasty animal). As a result, I've hardly blogged at all. I feel bad about it, but there was nothing I could do - I was literally drained of all my ener... read more »

DreamWeaver CS3 Slows Me Down

Many of you know that I have had a torrid love affair with HomeSite for last several years. She's one lady that I just can't seem to tear myself away from. Perhaps she has ruined me for other editors? Not sure. I know that every time I want to move on with my life, I just can't seem to find anything better. For the last few weeks, I have been tryi... read more »

Don't Be Lazy, Be Proud

Posted: January 10, 2008 at 9:00 AM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Life, Work

I was listening to a pod cast a while back and the speaker said something that always kind of rubs me the wrong way. He said: I do XYZ because I'm lazy. Now, if you didn't know what XYZ was, you might assume that it is something to indicate laziness such as: I never change my bed sheets because I'm lazy. or something like: I only use Cliff's ... read more »

The Fresh Face Of The New York ColdFusion User Group (NYCFUG)

Posted: January 7, 2008 at 3:17 PM by Ben Nadel

Tags: ColdFusion, Work

I love the NYCFUG. In the 3 or 4 years that I've been a member, I've had flawless attendance. I've never missed an opportunity to get together with my fellow ColdFusion enthusiasts, share ideas, solve problems, and have a CFExciting time! It's been great; but, as much as I love it, I dare to dream that it can be even better. I think 2008 holds a l... read more »

David Stamm On Styling Form Elements

Posted: December 7, 2007 at 8:27 AM by Ben Nadel

Tags: HTML / CSS, Work

David Stamm, a colleague of mine, sometimes referred to as the "Secret Weapon", feels very strongly about the styling of form elements. Specifically, he feels that we as web developers should not try to style form elements - the look and feel of form elements is determined both by the computer's operating system and the given browser and it doesn'... read more »

Colin Moock's ActionScript 3.0 Event (A Review)

Posted: November 12, 2007 at 7:26 PM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Flash, Work

I just got back from Colin Moock's ActionScript 3.0 tour event here in NYC and to just get this off my chest, sitting in a metal chair with thin padding for 9 hours is no picnic! My back hurts, my left shoulder hurts, my neck feels all tight; in general, I just feel drained. But, was it worth it? Absolutely. Colin Moock is an excellent present... read more »

Colin Moock's ActionScript 3.0 Event

Posted: November 12, 2007 at 7:46 AM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Flash, Work

Today, I am going to Colin Moock's AS3 training event here in New York City. It's supposed to be a grueling day (starting at 8:15am), but I am pretty excited about it. ActionScript is one of those things that I am familiar with, but that I don't know in any in-depth way. It's similar to Javascript and it's similar to ActionScript 2.0 (obviously)... read more »

Code Assertively

Posted: September 18, 2007 at 9:09 AM by Ben Nadel

Tags: ColdFusion, Work

Someone recently asked me about the difference between using Evaluate() vs. using array notation to get a dynamically-named query column value. I argued for using array notation. On one hand, I believe that it is minutely faster; but, the bigger issue is that using array notation is a more assertive coding style. After responding to that, I kind o... read more »

ColdFusion 8 Release Party Fun (Awesome Cake!)

Last night, my company, Nylon Technology , hosted a highly impromptu ColdFusion 8 release party at our office for the New York ColdFusion Users Group . We actually got a suprisingly good turn out for such a short notice and it was a lot of fun; free food, free beer, conversations about ColdFusion 8 going on all over the place - what more could y... read more »

Favorite Folders In HomeSite (Thanks John Elliott!)

Every now and then, I am lucky enough to be watching a developer who does something that just blows my mind and changes the way I program. That's how I found about such wonders as "Edit Include File" and the uber software, Beyond Compare. Well, a few weekends ago, it happened again; I was hanging out with John Elliott when he jumped to a favorit... read more »

Nylon Technology is having its 10 Year Anniversary party today!! (There's about to be mad amounts of BBQ chicken in my stomach!) I have been here at Nylon for a little over 4 years, so I like to think that I've had a little something to do with it being able to exist; but, the truth is, Jim Curran, Steve Gruschcow, and John Coletti have kept thi... read more »

FLV 404 Error On Windows 2003 Server

Posted: July 26, 2007 at 11:48 AM by Ben Nadel

I was working on a streaming video file for a client this morning using Flash and a linked FLV video file. Everything worked nicely - the Flash media player is so badass - until I uploaded it to the production server. Suddenly, the movie didn't play at all. Nothing I did seemed to work; cleaning the cache didn't do anything; all the paths were rig... read more »
