If you have followed this blog for a while, you will know that I am a fitness enthusiast. I love going to the gym and moving around some heavy steel (or at least that is my intent). What you might not know is that for the longest time, I have been using an old-school 12-button phone user. I've never had a fancy phone - usually whatever the cheapes... read more »

Friday night, I went to the gym with my lifting partner to hit up a work out. It ended up that he worked out and I kind of just went through the motions. After having had my teeth cleaned earlier in the day (which is super stressful for me), I had tension pain in my neck and traps and my gums felt all irritated. As such, I couldn't seem to focus o... read more »

I recently finished my first bottle of Novedex XT by Gaspari Nutrition . As I have been hitting the gym hard lately, I figured I would try to maximize the effort by adding some new supplementation to the mix. Novedex XT is advertised as working on two different fronts; on one hand, it increases the body's natural Testosterone levels; then, on oth... read more »

Sorry I was late getting to the gym, but I had to stop off and pick up my permit. Permit for what? For these guns!!!: Anyone who has spent any time in the gym has probably heard a hundred different references to the "Guns". Guns, are of course, your arms. Sometimes referred to... read more »

I just read a very cool article by Brad Kaczmarski over on Testosterone Nation . It goes over anecdotal evidence of how to determine whether your body is balanced between the various strength exercises you perform. The premise is that you pick a base exercise, such as the deadlift, and see how many reps you can do at given weight (ex. 5 reps at 3... read more »

I have been concentrating on watching what I eat and dropping some weight lately. I got on the scale at the gym a few days ago and it read 205 lbs.. I haven't been that light since College, so things are going in the right direction. As I have discussed before, purposely losing weight has been a hard task for me not only physically but especially... read more »

When it comes to nutrition in general, there's always a debate going on as to what is best; they're several different food pyramids, many different eating lifestyles, and about a million different diets. When it comes to what kind of nutrition is optimal for athletes, especially for strength athletes, the debate is almost emotional. Is it protein ... read more »

I just came across this most excellent article on T-Nation.com titled, " Feel Better For $10 ." The article outlines how to use a foam roller to perform your own Active Release Techniques (ART) (when you do it yourself, I guess it's called 'Self-Myofascial Release'). This is a very important article for me because I suffer from knee pain due to ti... read more »

I went to see my primary physician as well as my physical therapist (both of whom are part of the Sports Medicine office at Chelsea Piers ). The bad news: I have very tight hamstrings (I knew that), a tight TFA, a tight IT band, strength imbalances, weakness, pronating feet, and I am horribly out of shape (OK, I added that last one). The good new... read more »

Today was leg day, and it started off pretty well. I am off SPIKE for the time being but I tried something new for during-workout drink; I mixed a scoop of the protein powder in a water bottle and just kept diluting it as the workout went on. I think this worked nicely. As far as strength, I am still climbing up as my body remembers what it was li... read more »

I read a very cool little review in the May 2007 issue of Muscular Development on page 116. It summarized a Danish study that concluded spot reduction does actually work. As a former Personal Trainer at Equinox in New York City, it was an inevitable conversation that you had to have with every client - spot reduction does not exist; your body ha... read more »

Yesterday, I stopped off at a GNC on the way to my apartment to try one of those liquid gel energy squeeze packs that you always see in running stores. Well, they didn't have what I was looking for, but I ended up getting a bottle of " Spike " from Biotest and the developers of T-Nation.com . I love their web site and their products so I figured ... read more »

This is attempt #1734 to get back into the gym. I had a talk this weekend with my girlfriend. I told her that I felt horrible about my state of health ant that I needed some more time to work on "me" (yes, I know I sound like a woman). We came to the conclusion that on nights I work out (3 x week), I will be staying at my place rather than commuti... read more »

In the ongoing struggle which is trying to get my life in order, I have decided to actually start doing something about the scare tissue that I am building up in my legs. Due to what I believe is a combination of years of use and flat feet (which throw my legs out of alignment), I put a lot of stress on the lateral side of my legs. This stress cau... read more »

When it comes to losing weight, there is a serious psychological problem that I have. My problem is not losing weight (yeah, of course that part is very hard), my real problem is seeing the weight loss as a positive thing. Since I have really started watching what I eat and eating a higher protein diet (including a lot of liquid-centric meals), I ... read more »
