Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner!

Last night, I had the honor and the privilege to go see the 20th Anniversary release of Dirty Dancing at the Zigfield theatre in New York City. The movie first came out back in 1987 when I was just a young lad, so I never got to see it on the big screen. I have always loved the movie and thought it was a classic, but nothing compares to finally being able to see it on the silver screen.

From the second I sat down in my seat, I got this dopey grin on my face which, of course, persisted for the rest of the movie. I can't help it - the movie simply rocks! It has an awesome sound track and a great, feel-good story line. Plus, who doesn't love to see talented people dance? I know I do. And isn't there a part of you that just want to be the Patrick Swayze character, at least a little bit? Come on, you can admit it - when Alfie Zappacosta starts singing "Overload" and Patrick rips the wooden post out of the ground, only to turn around and smash in his side window - you totally wanted to be that bad ass!

Is the movie cheesy? Of course, that's part of the appeal. Are there lines in it that are just embarrassing to hear? Plenty of them. But that doesn't take away from the fun of the film. If anything, it just adds to the light hearted spirit of the movie going experience. I don't know if it's too late for you - it is the of the summer - but if this movie comes to your area, you HAVE to go see it on the big screen. If you like this movie already, but don't go, you are gonna be kicking yourself later.

And also, not everyone knows this, but Patrick Swayze actually sings the song She's Like The Wind. That's the song that plays as he drives away from Kellerman's, the day of the final talent show:

Feel her breath on my face
Her body close to me
Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league
Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind

Tell me with a straight face that that song doesn't rock? You know you turn up the volume on the very rare occasion that it gets played on the radio. Of course, the same goes for the rest of the songs... has there ever been a soundtrack that is more fun to sing along to?!? I doubt it.

This movie is just awesome. And, there's nothing like being in a theatre surrounded by people who explode into applause when Johnny says, "Nobody puts Baby in the corner!"

Ok, now I'm starting to wonder. Previous posts, you mentioned living in a gay section of the city and now this? ;)

I think I've seen this movie all the way through once, MAYBE twice. It's just nothing for me...I was in high school when this came out and "much too cool" to go see it. Had to live through all of the songs being on the radio though.

If there is a hell, the song and music video for "she's like the wind" will be playing in an endless loop!

I remember when it first came out but only recently got round to watching it to find out why it's become such a cult. It's a classic chick-flick no question, but I have to agree with its central premise: dancing = the time of your life (whatever your gender/orientation). No need to feel ashamed, Ben.

Freaking classic. I google your name, stumble upon your site, and WHAM, in the second post I read, what's the topic of conversation among the commenters? This is too awesome for words. You're some kind of man-god Ben.

Wow. This is like suddenly finding a support group for your secret shame. I'm not alone!

I always liked this movie, even though it is extremely cheesy. I just wish Jennifer Grey hadn't gotten the nose job. She's unrecognizable as Baby now. :(

@Jim,

Yeah, word - with her nose job she's almost unrecognizable. I'm not even sure what she's done since. She was great in this and Ferris Bueller's Day Off too.
