They Were Able To Heal Even When They Could Not Cure

Yesterday, I had a very unguarded discussion with my director, Eva Aldana, about working on the legacy platform at InVision. I explained to her that I have no delusions of grandeur — that I know I can't "save" the legacy system. But, that I still have to try. That I have to show up every day and at least attempt to make a meaningful difference for our customers. This is a hard emotion to explain to people on the outside. So, instead, I want to defer to an epiphany that Dr. Abraham Verghese shares in his TEDx Talk, The Great Lie that Tells the Truth:

This isn't the first time that I've leaned on Dr. Verghese for explanatory assistance. Last year, I pointed to another one of his TED Talks in order to emphasize the power of human contact; and, in a way, his TEDx Talk above is an extension of that same thought. That people have the power to heal even when they cannot cure. They do this through their compassion, and their understanding, and the willingness to show up and pay homage and respect through attention.

And, that's all I want to do. Every day, show up. And try to heal even when I know that I cannot cure.
