It's The Journey That Makes Us Happy, Not The Destination

As I am about to leave on vacation, I thought I would leave you all with a Jerry Springer-like final thought. As quoted from the movie, The Peaceful Warrior, "It's the journey that makes us happy, not the destination." As programmers, this is not only relavent to us, it is our life. We are not programmers because we love finishing projects and making deadlines; that's all good, but we're programmers because we love programming. We love waking up every day to a new obstacle, to a new problem in need of a solution. As programmers, we don't love to find solutions - we love to hunt them.

most of my career was software development, and until i just read your blog, i never realized that it was never finding the solution but the search for it that held me so tightly for all those years. I'm retired now and starting a new journey. i have not yet read "Way of the Peaceful Warrier", but since watching the movie last night I do intend to buy the book.

@Frank,

Yes, exactly! The problem solving is so much fun and so rewarding. And, part of what makes software engineering so much fun is that there are constantly new problems to be solved AND old problems to be solved in better, more elegant ways.

The book is good but definitely different than the movie. The book is actually a little more fantastical than the movie was - I guess they turned down the "out there" stuff to make the movie more accessible. Not to say it isn't good, it's just different.

I believe in love. I believe in compassion. I believe in human rights. I believe that we can afford to give more of these gifts to the world around us because it costs us nothing to be decent and kind and understanding. And, I want you to know that when you land on this site, you are accepted for who you are, no matter how you identify, what truths you live, or whatever kind of goofy shit makes you feel alive! Rock on with your bad self!
