Skin Spider : A Kinky Approach To Learning ColdFusion Application Development

By Ben Nadel on

I have been working fairly hard over the years to learn ColdFusion programming as best I can. I have made tremendous strides that I am happy with. I have not, however, been able to tackle the world of frameworks and object oriented programming. This is frustrating to me. I am not saying that I want to program that way. I am saying that I want to have enough information to make an informed decision. At this point, I cannot do that.

I have tried looking at the framework code samples. I have seen pet shop built in a 100 different ways. I can sort of see why all these frameworks WORK, I just don't always understand the benefits and I can't always understand how to apply these ideas to new situations not presented in the demos. I'll be the first to admit it: I concentrate on the details of ColdFusion because I don't seem to be smart enough to grasp the big picture. That NEEDS to change.

That is where Skin Spider comes into play. Skin Spider is a demo application that I am building from the ground-up with an iterative approach. I have no idea if "iterative approach" means more or less than I think it means, but basically what I am saying is that I am building this application from the ground-up, step-by-step, explaining my actions along the way. I will be posting updated code every day or every few days (depending on my time availability). Each posting will be an entirely new set of code so that you can see my application progress as I step through time.

At each posting, I will talk about the changes that I have made, the problems they solve, the problems that have arisen, and where I am going with all of it. I am doing this because it is what I would love to see in an application development life cycle and I think it would benefit a lot of people out there.... Can I be the only one?

Look, my site is called Kinky Solutions. That entails fun and it entails learning. That's what this project is all about. I know some of you have judged me in the past. I am cool with that. It's how I learn. You don't have to use the demo if you don't want to. But, don't get off put by the surface idea. The main goal of the project is learning all about ColdFusion Application Development. I would love all the feedback that I can get.
