The Arbor Day Web Development Team Planted Me Some Trees

A little while ago, I got a letter in the mail, which is really odd because I pretty much never get any personal mail at the office. When I opened it, I was extremely flattered to find a "Trees in Celebration" certificate issued by The Arbor Day Foundation. Apparently, the ADF web development team planted 10 native pine, fir, and cedar trees in the Plumas National Forest on my behalf. I am both extremely touched and quite thankful for such a gift! You guys rock!

Hey, you could cut them down and build a fort! ;)

I'm just kidding! That's actually a really, really cool way for them to show their appreciation. (planting the trees, not building a fort)

@Eric,

Right? And in a totally inappropriate way, I sort of feel like I planted some trees :)

So you're saying that some other people gave you wood?

Is that desk in the back left corner where I get to sit when I'm there in June?

@Andy,

That's actually Clark's desk. You'll be sitting opposite of that (right behind me).

Are you planning on giving Ben some wood too, Andy? I think it would be a nice gesture.

Hah! I'll have it in my pocket...the certificate that is.

Okay, okay. I'll be good.

Anyway, that's a really cool gesture. 2 years ago my wife and I donated a cow on my Dad's behalf (http://www.heifer.org/).

We sure miss Mom.

But seriously though, you donate money to purchase a cow for a poor village. They learn how to care for the animal, and have to donate the first calf to another village to carry on the tradition. It's really cool.

That's incredibly awesome- and well deserved. :)

A couple of years ago, we adopted/sponsored a wolf. Oddly, the other night there was some huffing and puffing at our door, but I'm sure it was nothing. ;)

*grumble* Everyone beat me to the wood jokes...

@Andy,

What a cool program. I love the way that people keep paying it forward with more cows!

@Wendy,

Is that the same kind of concept with the wolf (as with the cow)?

How cool is that? My wife and I have given Heifer International stuff as gifts several times over the years, chickens, goats, a cow, whatever. The gift of wood is the same sort of cool, but also somehow sillier, judging by the sheer number of jokes already generated ;)

@Ben It's a bit more like...er, Save the Children or whatever the organization is that says it sends you pictures of your child and you can correspond with him/her. Oh, but the wolves rarely write back. ;)

http://www.wolfpark.org/adopt.html

That's the link in case you're interested. If there's an animal you like that's in danger, there is probably an organization you can join to sponsor one. :)

Heifer International is a fantastic cause. It was the international charity Kyra and Max chose for their bar/bat mitzvah contribution.

@Wendy,

Why did I read that as "Shave the Children"?

@Ben,

Congratulations!
